My Latest Obsession - Modern Hexies!
The Fabric Fox on 16th Aug 2016
I have recently had a go at making hexies and as soon as I started I was hooked! Hexies are hand sewn using a traditional method called English paper piecing. They are really simple to make and great fun once you know how!
I was inspired to start making hexies by looking at Nicole Daksiewicz’s feed on Instagram. She is the queen of modern hexies. She has brought new life to a traditional method of sewing. I love the new ‘modern’ method of machining the hexies down onto a background fabric rather than hand sewing each hexie together because it’s quicker and it also creates a more affective design.
I learned how to make modern hexies by watching Nicole’s tutorial video on Youtube where she shows you step-by-step how to make a hexie. It’s a pretty long video but she has plenty of hints and tips for building up your modern hexie project so it’s definitely worth your time. That being said, Nicole also has a briefer tutorial page that’s just as good!
I got started making hexies by downloading a free printable template from Love Patchwork and Quilting. It’s a great resource as it has 5 different sized hexie templates and you just print the page you need, I used the smallest size - the 1 inch hexie. You have to cut the hexies out yourself but when you’re sat in front of the TV the time soon flies by!
I have now made up a huge pile of hexies, check back soon to see what I have created with them!
