The Fabric Fox Creatives is our way of collaborating and sharing the work of talented, crafty writers. Every few weeks we will share a guest blog from someone who has made something using our range of fabrics. Harriet Johnson, who you may recognise from Kirstie Allsopp's Handmade Christmas, has made a dress from one of our Snap to Grid fabrics.

I'm going through a bit of a pink-on-red phase at the moment. I say phase but really I don't see any end to this obsession in sight, so when I saw this a-ma-zing Permanent Wave cotton I knew it needed to make its way into my wardrobe sharpish!

When the fabric arrived, folded beautifully and calling out for me to stroke it, I realised that I didn't actually have a plan of what to make with it. The problem was that I wanted to be able to wear whatever I made through all of the seasons – I didn't fancy having to banish such a gorgeous print to the back of my wardrobe for eight months of the year! I know that a lot of us prefer sewing summer garments, so figured that it might be useful to make a 'summer' pattern into something that (with the right styling) can work for winter too.

My first thought was version two of the By Hand London Sabrina dress; the epitome of summer! It's a princess seamed spaghetti strap number with buttons all the way down the front - something that you couldn't possibly wear in the cooler months, right? My vision was wearing the dress over the top of a really chunky high-neck knit with tights, so away I went to stick together and cut out the PDF pattern! I ran into some trouble though when, after hours of glueing the pattern pieces, I cut the wrong size lines. A lot of the size lines look really, really similar and I ended up with a load of weird mishmashes and having to start from scratch! I was a bit annoyed with it by that point, so moved on to option two: the Lilou dress from Love at First Stitch by Tilly and the Buttons.

Because I wanted to layer the finished garment, I changed the scooped neckline of the dress into a relatively deep v-neck. Remembering that I couldn't make it into too deep a plunge because I wanted to wear it on its own in the summer months, I folded the bodice pattern piece from the strap in a gentle curve. As the front bodice is cut on the fold, each side of the neckline will definitely be symmetrical so I didn't need to worry about getting it the same on both sides!

The 100% cotton fabric is a beautiful weight, that'll work perfectly for summer and winter. It feels totally luxurious to the touch – I thought that it had some kind of linen content at first! While it's heavy, it still has a wonderful drape and holds the pleats of the Lilou dress beautifully – although don't forget to let the skirt hang for around a day before you hem so that it doesn't end up uneven! I lined the bodice in a lightweight red cotton rather than the self fabric because I was a little bit worried that might make it a little bit too bulky.

I misjudged the size a little bit, so it's ended up a bit too big around the waist and with the pleats a bit wide at the front, but nothing that I can't take in!
