Meet The Creative: Q&A With Jo Baker

Meet The Creative: Q&A With Jo Baker

The Fabric Fox on 4th Jan 2018

We sent Jo some of Cotton + Steel's new jersey fabric and she made this gorgeous top using the Agnes pattern by Tilly and the Buttons.

Here's your chance to get to know her a little better - Here's a brief Q&A we did with her.

Hello, I'm Jo - And I run my own sewing classes from my lovely home in Chelmsford, Essex.

When did you start sewing?

About the age of 5 - so that's 40 years now!

Why do you love to sew?

It makes me feel happy. I lose myself in a project and while I love the things I make (mostly!) I get the most pleasure out of the process of creating.

What do you love to sew most?

New things - different patterns, something I've not tried before. I love a challenge.

What, or who, inspires you?

I am so inspired by the Instagram sewing community but I also love hearing about clothing history and how fashions and techniques have evolved.

What are your go-to colours?

This is a hard one as I'm a bit of a fabric magpie! But looking at my stash, I do love blues and greens and also what my husband calls 'sludgy colours' (taupe, mole, etc). I am more drawn to the feel of a fabric when I buy so any fabric shopping in real life involves lots of stroking, ha ha!

Any advice/tips?

Have a go - what's the worst that can happen? If you make mistakes, you will learn from them.

Recommendations (books, sewing supplies, craft fairs, etc.)?

I love buying sewing books and always go back to them for inspiration. I've really enjoyed going to the big Knitting and Stitching shows recently and the Great British Sewing Bee Live - and wish the TV show was back on our screens.

What do you like to do when you’re not sewing?

Yoga is my go-to exercise - it makes me feel alive.

Who is your favourite Disney character?

Buzz Lightyear - he makes me laugh and I love his 'can-do' attitude to life!

If you had a pet fox what would you name them and why?

I don't think I could have a pet fox - my cat Tilly wouldn't approve!!
